Danaë was the daughter of King Acrisius of Argos, and in the myth, she was imprisoned by her father to prevent a prophecy that her son would kill him. Zeus, however, appeared to Danaë in the form of a shower of gold, impregnating her with Perseus. The painting symbolizes fertility, divine intervention, and the power of love.
